Memorial Arboretum Added to Canada’s Largest Veteran Care Facility through GrandTrees and Sunnybrook Partnership

TORONTO, ON – On Wednesday, September 23rd, a special ceremony was held at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto to acknowledge the addition of the Sunnybrook Memorial Arboretum. Nearly 500 trees and shrubs were added; including a very special Vimy Oak, a direct descendent from those that sprouted acorns brought back from the Battle of Vimy Ridge. These trees, provided by GrandTrees Climate Solutions, are also in support of the Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign.
“Our young people rightly accuse us of selfishly exploiting nature; the scientists say we can help repair our communities and the planet by preserving and planting trees in healthy biodiverse ecosystems”, says Michael de Pencier, co-founder of GrandTrees Climate Solutions. “This is why we’re proud to support projects that add to the urban tree canopy in Toronto. We are truly grateful for this generous gift of new trees honouring our war heroes. They will stand as a living tribute to their contributions, as well as providing a place of reflection and healing for generations to come."

With the help of sponsors and supporters like GrandTrees and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign continues to resonate with Canadians from coast to coast. The project will see 2,000,000 trees planted as a living, breathing tribute to those who have served their country in times of conflict. Located along the Highway 401 corridor between Trenton and Toronto, known as the Highway of Heroes, 117,000 of these trees will honour those Canadians who have fallen in war since the confederation.

About The Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign
When is a tree more than just a tree? The answer is when the tree is part of a memorial to honour Canada’s fallen heroes. We are planting 2 million trees for all Canadians that have served during times of conflict since Confederation and including the war of 1812. 117,000 of the most prominent trees will be planted along and near the stretch of the 401 known as the Highway of Heroes, one tree for every life lost while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. Un arboretum commémoratif créé pour le plus important centre de soins pour anciens combattants au Canada grâce à un partenariat entre GrandTrees et Sunnybrook

TORONTO, ON – Le mercredi 23 septembre, la création de l’Arboretum commémoratif Sunnybrook a été soulignée lors d’une cérémonie très spéciale qui a eu lieu au Centre des sciences de la santé Sunnybrook, à Toronto. Près de 500 arbres et arbustes ont été plantés, dont un superbe chêne de Vimy, un descendant direct de ceux qui ont produit les glands rapportés après la bataille de la crête de Vimy. GrandTrees Climate Solutions a procuré ces végétaux dans le cadre de la campagne Des arbres pour l’Autoroute des héros.
« Nos jeunes nous accusent à juste titre d’avoir exploité égoïstement la nature, et les scientifiques disent que nous pouvons régénérer nos communautés et notre planète en préservant et en plantant des arbres dans des écosystèmes sains et diversifiés », a déclaré Michael de Pencier, cofondateur de GrandTrees Climate Solutions. « Voilà ce qui nous incite à soutenir fièrement des projets liés à la réhabilitation de la canopée torontoise. Et c’est avec le concours de commanditaires comme St. Joseph Communications et AGF Management Limited que nous pouvons le faire. »

Nous sommes très reconnaissants du généreux cadeau que sont ces arbres honorant nos héros. Pendant des générations, cet hommage vivant soulignera leurs contributions tout en offrant un lieu de réflexion et de guérison. »
« Il est toujours réjouissant de voir notre mémorial vivant grandir, surtout quand nos arbres sont mis en terre dans un endroit fréquenté par de nombreux anciens combattants », a dit Mark Cullen, président et cofondateur de la campagne Des arbres pour l’Autoroute des héros. « Nous remercions chaleureusement GrandTrees et son personnel qui ont rendu les choses possibles. »
Grâce à des commanditaires et des alliés comme GrandTrees et le Centre des sciences de la santé Sunnybrook, la campagne Des arbres pour l’Autoroute des héros continue de trouver écho chez les Canadiens d’un océan à l’autre. En tout, deux millions d’arbres seront plantés pour constituer un véritable hommage vivant rendu à ceux qui ont servi leur pays en période de conflit. Les 117 000 mis en terre en bordure de l’autoroute 401, entre Trenton et Toronto, tronçon connu sous le nom d’Autoroute des héros, évoqueront les Canadiens tombés en temps de guerre depuis la Confédération.

À propos de la campagne Des arbres pour l'Autoroute des héros
Un arbre peut-il être plus qu'un arbre ? Oui, lorsqu'il célèbre la mémoire d'un héros canadien tombé au combat. Nous planterons deux millions d'arbres, soit un pour chaque Canadien ou Canadienne ayant servi en période de conflit depuis la Confédération ainsi que durant la guerre de 1812. Symbolisant les membres des Forces armées canadiennes disparus, 117 000 d'entre eux se dresseront en bordure ou à proximité de la portion de l'autoroute 401 appelée l'Autoroute des héros. Cet hommage vivant s'avérera naturellement bénéfique pour l'environnement, évoquera l'apport de ces valeureux militaires à notre pays et rappellera aux gens qui emprunteront l'autoroute la reconnaissance que nous leur devons.
